If you're trying to conceive — naturally or through IVF — the products that touch your most intimate skin matter more than most people expect. Hormonal stimulation can leave the vulva and vaginal mucosa drier and more reactive than usual, and ingredients that pose no problem at any other time can quietly work against you now.
Two things the research is clear about
A balanced vaginal microbiome supports implantation. A Lactobacillus-dominant vaginal microbiota — particularly L. crispatus — is consistently linked to better assisted-reproduction outcomes. In one observational study, women whose flora was Lactobacillus-dominant at the time of embryo transfer reached clinical-pregnancy rates around 53% and implantation rates around 70%, compared with 25% and 42% in women whose microbiome was disrupted. Bacterial vaginosis, the most common form of dysbiosis, has been associated with roughly a 2.4× higher risk of early pregnancy loss after IVF and a 2–3× higher risk of preterm birth.
Many ordinary lubricants and washes are not made for trying to conceive. A 2024 systematic review found that conventional lubricants containing glycerin or parabens — including some of the best-selling brands on the pharmacy shelf — can reduce sperm motility and damage chromatin integrity within minutes of contact. Parabens are recognised endocrine disruptors; Harvard-led research has linked higher urinary paraben levels in women to shorter menstrual cycles and reduced fertility.
